How long is a course?  How long is a class?

There are some six-week classes that have specific beginning and ending dates.  These are our "series" classes (i.e., beginner series).  Other classes are on-going in that you may start at anytime.  You may "drop-in" and try out a class if you like.  There is a $15 charge for this.

The length of a single yoga class is 1 1/2 hours.  The meditation and Feldenkrais classes are 1 hour.

What if I miss a class?

If you are in one of the series classes, you may make up one missed class in an on-going beginner yoga class with the permission of the teachers involved.

If you miss an on-going class you may come to any of the other on-going classes, even in another discipline.  Or you may add the missed class to the end of your 6 sessions.  In other words, if you sign up for 6 classes you get 6 classes even if it takes you 7, 8, or 10 weeks to complete the set.  We will keep track of your attendance.  However, you must use the 6 sessions within a six month period from the time you paid your fee.

Do I need to pre-register?  May I start one of the Beginner Series Classes Late?

You may join the series classes 1 week late with the permission of the teacher.  There will be no discount; you will still have to pay full price.  Please pre-register for the 6-week series classes.  You may call Orbis at (502) 896-1054 or contact us through email.  For the on-going classes, you may start at any time.

What do I wear?  Do I need to bring anything?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing; warm-up suits in the winter and shorts and a T-shirt in the summer are fine.  Tights and leotards (without feet) are appropriate, but not necessary.  Skirts and blue jeans are not appropriate because they do not allow full movement.  Also, wear socks instead of panty hose.

It is not necessary to bring anything with you.  Orbis provides mats, blankets and props.  If you have your own props and would like to use them, you are welcome to do so.

Should I eat before I come?

Yoga and Feldenkrais are best done on an empty stomach.  If you must eat, eat lightly.  It is okay to eat before meditation as long as it is an hour before class and the meal is not heavy.

What style of hatha yoga is taught?  What is Feldenkrais?

Orbis teachers are trained in different styles of yoga.  Kripalu, AtmaYoga, Integral Yoga Therapy and Iyengar are some of the styles of yoga you will find at Orbis.  The emphasis is on revitalizing the body, opening the heart and awakening the spirit.  Please read more about the styles of yoga taught at Orbis and the Instructors on the  About Us  page.

The Feldenkrais Method is a system of learning that helps to develop body awareness.   It is sensory-motor learning.  As we become aware of our movements and how we use our bodies as a result of what we sense, feel, and experience, we can learn to change or modify the ways in which we move and respond.  We learn to move with greater ease, comfort, and efficiency.  During a lesson the teacher orally guides the participants in exploratory movement sequences.  Lessons help us to discover options for movement.  They help us reduce pain and anxiety and create a feeling of comfort, relaxation, and well-being.  The Feldenkrais Method is a process oriented modality that requires no strenuous or threatening movements.
