More information to come.
The pelvic floor is a part of the body you seldom give much thought to until you experience a problem related to it, such as incontinence or lower back pain. However, the pelvic floor is involved in many life functions, such as digestion, elimination, reproduction, breathing and balance. So even if you don't have a special issue related to the pelvic floor, understanding its role and encouraging its healthy function can contribute to your well-being in all these areas. Dorothy Henning, in conjunction with Orbis Yoga Studio, will present a four part pelvic floor workshop for women on Sunday afternoons this Fall. Ms Henning, originally from Louisville, is a Feldenkrais Practitioner now living and practicing in Strasbourg, France.
Pelvic Floor Workshop II
This workshop is an opportunity to build on your experience from the workshop, Pelvic Floor I, and to continue to explore the multi-faceted and integral role of the pelvic floor. You will enrich your understanding through knowledge as well as sensorially through gentle exercises.
About the film
Dorothy Henning has been invited by Orbis Yoga Studio to do a short presentation on the pelvic floor and to answer questions about the upcoming Pelvic Floor workshop this Fall. Ms Henning, originally from Louisville, is a Feldenkrais Practitioner now living and practicing in Strasbourg, France. After the presentation, you are invited to stay for the showing of a PBS film.
Dorothy Henning, originally from Louisville, is a Feldenkrais practitioner who now lives and practices at the Henning Institut du Mouvement, in Strasbourg, France. Let her guide you in learning how the pelvic floor plays an integral role in so many of the functions of the body. The four-session series helps you increase your awareness and enhance your well-being through the healthy and comfortable functioning of the pelvic floor.
Recent studies have shown that working with the muscles of the pelvic floor can improve its function. The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education uses easy to do gentle exercises to increase your awareness and finally your strength of the pelvic floor. Since the movements of the pelvic floor are subtle, we will always begin with a full body movement instead of isolating the pelvic floor. This way of learning awareness of the pelvic floor has been shown to be very effective and anyone can do it. The workshop is spaced with one week intervals between sessions in order to give you the time to assimilate the information and the exercises that we do. The workshop is for every woman, active or non-active, young or old. You don't have to have any previous experience with the Feldenkrais Method to benefit from this workshop. The workshop could be especially helpful for women after childbirth or an abdominal operation, or who have problems with urinary incontinence. Even if you don't have a special issue with the pelvic floor, having a well functioning and strong pelvic floor is part of taking care of yourself… now and for your future. So whether you have a special issue with your pelvic floor or are curious to explore how this group of muscles plays such an integral role in so many of the functions in the body, this workshop will help you increase your awareness and enhance your well-being through the healthy and comfortable functioning of the pelvic floor.
Prevalence estimates of urinary incontinence (Annals of Internal Medicine, March 18, 2008):
In general, urinary incontinence affects about 19% of women age 19 to 44 years, 25% of those age 45 to 64 years, and 30% of those age 65 years and older. About 18% of younger women (19 to 44 years of age) and 28% of women older than age 65 years experience daily urinary incontinence.

Why this workshop?
A strong, flexible back is vital and necessary to get you through your busy, everyday life. A regular practice of yoga is a way to maintain a healthy back, neck, hips and general well being. Studies have also shown that yoga helps to alleviate chronic back pain due to stress, improper alignment and weak muscles. Yoga students and teachers know this, doctors and chiropractors know this, physical therapists know this.
You can take charge of taking care of your back by learning how to:
– Improve your posture, balance and body awareness
– Strengthen your back and core
– Increase flexibility in your back, hips and shoulders
– Relieve chronic back/neck pain
What will be included in this workshop?
Yogic techniques and tools of understanding proper alignment, body awareness, anatomy in everyday language, mindful breathing, and specific postures will be explained and practiced. Safe and effective decompression/traction exercises will be explored in ways that will benefit both those new to yoga and more experienced students. If you need help with your back body, this is a way to start. For those without back problems/ issues, this workshop will be useful in understanding how these problems develop, how to prevent them, and how to maintain a healthy back through proper alignment, body awareness and mindful breathing. Teachers will gain valuable information on how to understand, assess and work with students with back issues.

Yin Yoga is a slow, meditative and calming practice…
Seven Poses an hour are held for approximately 4–7 minutes each…
By holding the poses for an extended period of the time, the body is given an opportunity to absorb deep stretching in the muscles, and more importantly the connective tissues such as the fascia, ligaments, and joints… Many props are used to make these poses as comfortable as possible and you are encouraged to relax completely into each pose…
The anatomical focus of most yin poses are from the lower back to the knees, therefore, all poses are done seated or reclined on the mat. The practice begins with a brief yang warm-up to prepare the body for extended holds.
Each asana is complimented by Guided Meditation or Yoga Nidra bringing about an incredible calmness over the body and mind helping to sustain the posture, reduce stress, let go of the past and look forward to the future…
This workshop will include a 2-hour Yin Practice and discussion on yin/yang principles of the universe, diet, nutrition, and how to make proactive lifestyle choices that will improve the quality of your life on a consistent basis.
